What is Mi Amor and The Dirty Little Secret?
I came up with the idea for Mi Amor when I started looking at problems that I was facing on a daily basis and began coming up with stylish solutions for them. The Dirty Little Secret was the first product I created. I would never remember to use my lingerie wash bag because it was always crammed in a drawer somewhere, so my bras would always end up misshapen, and I’ve had more than one pair of lacy undies torn. The Dirty Little Secret made washing my delicates convenient, and I was also able to use it for extra storage or when traveling.

How did you become interested in this field?
I’ve been an avid knitter since my teens, and it always made me happy to create things that other people could enjoy. Starting this business was a natural fit for me because it combines my creativity with my knack for problem solving.

Why did you create this business?
I created this business with the idea that I could help women solve life’s daily problems with a little flair.

What do you love most about what you do?
I love that each day brings something new and that there’s so much variety in managing every facet of the business.

What is the most stressful aspect of your business?
Some days, there’s so much to do that it can be overwhelming. I just try to break my to-do list into small chunks and cross things off one at a time.

What’s a typical day like for you?
During a typical day, I wake up early to send and respond to emails. I spend time networking with other small business owners to come up with ideas for cross-promotions, and I like to take time out to brainstorm ideas for new products. At the end of the day, I mail out my press kits and ship any orders.

What advice or tips would you give someone who wants to do what you do?
My advice would be for them to have a clear vision of what they’re trying to accomplish and to reach out to other entrepreneurs for advice. People are often willing to share their experiences to help others from making “rookie” mistakes.

Finish this sentence: This career is for you if ______

Job Title: Inspirational coach and speaker, aspiring author and host/founder of Inspired Lady Radio

What is Inspired Lady Radio?
Inspired Lady Radio is the Inspiration Station for women and young ladies. Every Wednesday at noon EST, we have conversations about issues that affect women and teen girls in their everyday lives from an inspired point of view. At Inspired Lady Radio, it’s our mission to support women and young ladies to know who they are and to live an inspired life.

How did you become interested in inspiring women and young girls?
I’ve been interested in inspiring women and young girls ever since I can remember. I used to get mad when I saw women and girls allowing themselves to be treated in ways that were disrespectful and dishonoring.

As I got older, I got madder and madder about women not knowing who they were and allowing themselves to be disrespected. In order to fulfill my purpose on this earth, I couldn’t just be mad. I had to go through some things, I had to learn a few lessons. I went through things in my life, and I learned a lot from [things] like depression, emotional and verbal abuse, homelessness, being broker than broke, being a broke entrepreneur, etc.

While I was working on overcoming those things, I kept telling myself that I was going through it so I could help someone else. That’s why I got interested in inspiring women and young girls.

Why did you create your business?
What made me start Inspired Lady was a strong desire to see women come together and support each other so we can enlighten, educate and grow with each other. I wanted us to come together, help and not hurt and wanted to show us that we can work together.

Our mission has changed since Inspired Lady was established. Now, our mission is to support women and young girls in knowing who they are and living an inspired life.

What do you love most about what you do?
What I love most about my business is being able to connect and inspire others on a daily basis.

What is the most stressful aspect of what you do?
The most stressful aspect of my job is keeping up with social media.

What’s a typical day like for you?
A typical day for me is waking up in the morning, thanking God for five things off the top of my head, praying, exercising, getting my son ready and off to school, working and spending time with my family. Sounds kind of boring, but it’s not. [laughs]

What advice or tips would you give someone who wants to do what you do?
The advice I would give to someone who wants to do what I do is…

– Stay true to yourself and why you’re doing what you’re doing.

– Never stop learning about yourself and about your business.

– Trust your spirit.

– Surround yourself with like-minded people.

– Get a coach or mentor.

– Prioritize, prioritze, prioritize.

Finish this sentence: This career is for you if :
This career is for you if you are dedicated to the evolution and the enlightenment of women and humanity as a whole.

Successful Sistas is an interview series featuring successful women who have a career they love. Job Title: Fearless Living Strategist, award-winning author, speaker, coach and creator of WEPP (Women Entrepreneurs Partnering for Profit). How did you become interested in empowering women? When I really reflect on it, I’ve always had an innate ability to inspire and motivate others. In fact, not many people know it, but I used to be a certified personal trainer, and many of my clients were women who I empowered to make their health a top priority and make the time to care for themselves internally and externally. So, I believe my desire and ability to empower women is a natural gift that I have finally taken the time to sharpen. Why did you decide to make a career out of it?

I will never forget how alive and exhilarated I felt the first time I took the stage as a public speaker to empower women, and I will never forget the response from the women who were hungry for inspiration. That first time I took the stage one year ago, I knew this was the career…the calling for me.

Why did you write your book, “How I Flatlined and Woke Up in 45 Days- A Guide to Empowered Living?”
Like so many other women and moms I meet on a daily basis, I had reached a point in my life where I just felt stuck. I felt disconnected from life because I was existing according to a routine. I was fulfulling all my roles as a woman, wife, mother, employee…but I felt lifeless inside. I hadn’t tapped into what my passion was and the thing that nurtured my spirit. I was always ripping and running, doing for everyone else and wearing the big “S” on my chest but was unfulfilled. And I compared that feeling to having flatlined– in that I felt I had lost my heartbeat in life. But, I also reached a point where I knew it was up to me to create a change. So I devised a 45-day guide to become a more empowered woman who was bold, persistent and fearless in creating life transformation from an ordinary life to an extraordinary life. And once I experienced that transformation, I knew I had a responsibility to share that message with others.

What do you love most about what you do?
I love having an impact on people’s lives. There is no feeling that matches that of having a woman I’ve never met send me an email or call me on the phone to say, “I heard you speak,” or “I purchased your book, and it changed my life, and now I am on my own path to coming out of my flatlined state. Thank you for sharing your journey.” That type of feedback is priceless and pushes me to keep doing what I do.

What is the most stressful aspect of your career?
Wow, how much time do you have? [Lol]. For me, the most stressful aspect is balancing it all. Making sure that as I pursue my passion, I balance the time I devote to growing my business with the time I devote to my husband and three children. Sometimes, as women entrepreneurs, we get so wrapped up into growing our businesses that we lose sight of why we pursued the business in the start. For me, I pursued the business in order to have more time and flexibility to be a great wife and mom. So, I have to remind myself of that often, especially when I’m considering taking a speaking engagement out of town that will separate me from my family for two or three days. I have to strategically map out my schedule and make sure I’m achieving balance in all aspects of my life– career and family.

What’s a typical day like for you?
Nonstop! Up by 6 A.M. to get my three children ready for the day; drop off my daughter at school by 9 A.M.; on Facebook to check in on my new networking group, Women Entrepreneurs Partnering for Profit (WEPP) and post my daily empowerment tip, followed by back-to-back phone calls with people who want to know more about WEPP or are inquiring about hiring me for a speaking engagement, teleconferences with organizations I want to collaborate with. [I] then take a breather in the middle of the day to tend to my boys (ages three and four) to read them some books and give them some of my time and attention. [I am] then back out of the house by 3 P.M. to pick up my daughter from school, back home to get dinner prepared, be there for my daughter for assistance with homework, bath time for the little ones, maybe a movie with them or story time, then back to work on the business usually until 1 A.M. or 2 A.M. In between it all, I fit in fun nights with the kids during the week, Girl Scouts with my daughter and weekend activities with my family as a whole. It can be a grueling schedule.

What advice or tips would you give someone who wants to do what you do?
Make sure it is your passion! It is only when you are driven by passion that you will be willing to stay the course and exert the time, energy, effort and financial resources to succeed in this industry. And be sure to enlist mentors and coaches who are already doing what you aspire to do. They will help to guide you and keep you on course.

Finish this sentence: This career is for you if _____
You are authentic, selfless and willing to be of service to others to make an impact on their lives.

Job Title: Women’s Empowerment Speaker & Entrepreneur

How did you become interested in your career field?
Currently, I am an entrepreneur and women’s empowerment speaker. As a child, I was always dreaming of being many things. I remember finding a small piece of paper that had several career occupations that I wrote down. As I reflect on the options that were penned, I realize that none of them came to fruition because they were not part of my true purpose and destiny. Honestly, I believe through the process of dreaming big dreams, I finally cultivated a specific path that was a more accurate expression of who I have been designed to be in the earth. In a nutshell, through a multitude of wrong twists and turns, I stumbled on it.

Why did you decide to pursue your career choices?
As a result of many hours searching my heart and mind regarding what really makes me come alive. I remember reading countless books that would encourage one to pursue the things that came naturally to them. They would ask what is it that you would do if you never were paid for doing it? I wrote in my journal “sing, speak and write.” I am a creative being, and I am most fulfilled when I am displaying my creativity to inspire others to live their best lives. As I mature, I want to spend all of my days living on point, on purpose!

What do you love most about what you do?
In one word– FREEDOM! This entails the freedom to pursue my deepest dreams, freedom of expression, freedom of time, freedom to make a significant impact, freedom to discover new gifts and talents, freedom of thoughts, etc. …

What is the most stressful aspect?
Managing the ever increasing demands placed on my time for requested services, prioritizing each request and executing efficiently, effectively and excellently. I was just reading a quote that summarized these feelings accurately, “Because we don’t know what is really important to us, everything seems important. Because everything seems important, we have to do everything. Other people, unfortunately, see us as doing everything, so they expect us to do everything. Doing everything keeps us busy; we don’t have time to think about what is really important to us.” – Anonymous

What’s a typical day like for you?
Every day is unique, based upon projects and deadlines. The first thing that happens in the morning is my dog, co-co, greets me with her beloved ball and is ready to play catch! I love morning walks around the lake to get the blood circulating and my mind ready for the new day. This is where I have a heart-to heart- talk with myself. [Recently] at the lake, I was affirming myself, stating, “Success is intentional, never accidental. I intend to win!”
I spend time reading and praying about the concerns pressing upon my heart at the time. I’m preparing to speak in a couple of days, an extensive amount of research is taking place and reflection on personal experiences that I can include in my message. A few days out of the week, I administer beauty services as a licensed esthetician. If jewelry inventory is low, I will create new pieces for product tables. Every day, I knock on doors, sending out pertinent information about my expertise and professional experience. I am currently partnering with a media network, and I am the talent for how-to videos, which means I have to research 10-20 video topics and have them recorded on location. I travel frequently on the weekends, doing freelance makeup artistry for fashion shows, editorial print work, etc. I also do public appearances as the 2010-2011 American Image National Queen. I am back in the recording studio, [and I] meet with my vocal coach weekly and perform publicly as requested. That’s a small glimpse…believe me, there is a lot more!

What advice or tips would you give to someone who wants to do what you do?
Entrepreneurship is not for the faint in heart. You have to have an enormous amount of creativity and faith in God and His faithfulness, in yourself and your dreams no matter what type of adversity you are faced with. My motto is to live magnificently in the face of advertisity. Tough times will come, but tough people overcome them all! Never give up, and know that every struggle and sacrifice is worth the sweet moments of victory you will achieve because you chose to believe.

Finish this sentence: This career is for you if _______
You have an insatiable to desire to be your own boss, to express the hidden treasures of your heart, want to leave a legacy for generations to come, and desire to be a role model of success for others who are seeking a courageous example of uncommon leadership in this day and age. Go for it!

Job Title: Author, Playwright

How did you become interested in writing?
Since I was a little girl, I have always been interested in writing. At the tender age of 10, my writing was published in my mother’s poetry book, “Aunt Rosie.” That was very exciting for me to do as a child, and it further sparked my interest in writing.
In January of 2010, in my last year of college, my professor became intrigued by my writing and asked me to write a play for my school, Loyola University Chicago’s Black World Studies Department, and I agreed. The day my play “Race Still Matters: Scenes from the University” debuted to a packed out audience, I knew then that writing was the path for me to take. To see the words that I had written on paper come to life through the characters and to have positive feedback was more than enough motivation to continue. Since then, it has been an incredible journey.

Why did you decide to pursue a career as an author?
I love telling stories and entertaining people with stories. Since I am a very creative person, I decided that aside from writing plays, writing books was another interest of mine. One night a few months ago, I was having a conversation with a friend about relationships and an excellent idea for a story line came to me. That night, I decided to play around with the idea, and I ended up writing until 5 A.M. I was shocked and in disbelief that such a great story of fiction was inside of me. I knew at that moment that being an author is what I wanted to do. That is how my book, “Twisted Lies: Your Sister’s Child,” was born.
Creating characters, plots and stories is fun and amazing. Sometimes, it actually feels like they really are human. I love that I am able to write about situations that many women face and at the same time, enjoy it. Everyone loves being entertained, and I am able to give entertainment while writing about real issues while touching the heart.

What do you love most about what you do?
It’s hard to say what I love most about what I do because I love everything equally. The entire process of getting an idea to writing it down on my computer, watching it become a book or play is most exciting for me. I love that I can control what I want to write about such as love, relationships, women’s issues, race relations, etc. It is rewarding and worth every minute of my time when someone emails or tells me that they are touched by my work.

What is the most stressful aspect of your job?
The most stresssful part of my job is trying to keep up with everything that I am doing. Being an author, playwright, blogger and violinist full time can get a little stressful, but I love every minute of it. Having a wonderful job such as this is nothing more than a blessing.

What’s a typical day like for you?
I wake up early in the morning to prepare for a long day of writing. Around noon, I usually go through my emails from my manager, and handle the business portion. By the time I am finished handling the business part, it is usually already 3 P.M. At 3 P.M., I sit down and write a blog post for my blog Uptown Mahogany that can be found on Blogger and for my Facebook fan page, Artaska Perry. Afterwards, I take a break until 6 P.M., and then I write until about 1 A.M. Sometimes, I end up writing till 5 A.M. A typical day for me is very long, but it is filled with enjoyment.

What advice or tips would you give to someone who wants to do what you do?
If writing or becoming an author is your passion, stick with it, and don’t let anything stop you. It’s a lot of hard work and dedication, but in the end, it is worth it. To see all the time and energy that you put into writing pay off in the end is overwhelming.

What is Afiya? Afiya is an all natural bath and body line. We have a variety of products including hair butter, body butter, herbal eczema butter, exfoliating body polish, essential hair oil, shampoo and conditioner. All products are mineral oil-free, paraben-free, petroleum-free and sulfate-free. We use gentle ingredients, and most of our ingredients are certified organic and/or fair trade. Our product line is all natural; however, it is developed for all people, all hair types and all skin types (including problem skin).

How did you become interested in natural and organic products?
Ashley: When I became natural, I made a complete lifestyle change. I decided that I wanted to be healthier inside and out, so I moved towards organic and natural products for my hair and body.

Why did you create a business?
Ashley: We began Afiya in February 2010, but we began mixing in late 2009. As both of us went natural, we found that there were limited amounts of truly natural and ethically sound products that were actually affordable. Being that we are both graduate students, we believe in affordability, and our products reflect that belief. Also, after finding that much of the shea butter that’s being used in products is not fair trade, meaning African women are getting paid pennies for their hard work, we really wanted to develop a product that reflected our beliefs.

What do you love most about what you do?
Ashley: I love being able to help customers who never thought they could go natural. Several of our customers are transitioners, and they all say that our products helped make their process a lot smoother. Also, just knowing that I can help someone feel confident about their natural hair or their problem skin with Afiya really makes what we do worthwhile.

What is the most stressful aspect of it?
Ashley: Balancing school and Afiya. Jerilyn, my co-founder, and I are both full-time graduate students, and sometimes, it gets really hectic with papers and presentations.

What’s a typical day like for you?
Ashley: I usually spend the mornings checking emails and mailing out products for online orders. I also post articles and information to our Twitter and Facebook accounts. In the afternoons, I usually have class, then I’ll spend time working on my school work and doing research.

What advice or tips would you give someone who wants to do what you do?
Ashley: Just step out on FAITH! If you have a product or idea that you think will be beneficial to others, allow people to test it, and just get your product out there. Also, make sure that you take the steps to get your business legalized and established under the proper guidelines.

Finish this sentence: This career is for you if ________

Job Title: Owner of Queens of Weave

What is Queens of Weave?
Queens of Weave is an online customized wig business that creates high quality wigs to fit any lifestyle. Queens of Weave is currently a one-woman show, [and] we help women take their wigs to the next level. We are unique because we educate women about wig maintenance and give styling tips. Basically, we do not just sell a wig and disappear. To top that off, we offer something for everyone, from affordable to high-end pieces through out Couture Wig Designing services for VIP clients. Additionally, we don’t just sell customized pieces; we also know how to make lace wigs and teach others how to make them.

How did you become interested in hair care?
I have always been obsessed with hair since middle school. I started collecting hair books in the seventh grade. I was and still am the go-to girl for hair advice and hair styling techniques. I became obsessed with weaves and wigs because I felt like I could do anything with them without damaging my real hair. I would constantly redesign my look with wigs and weaves. I strongly feel that your hair makes a statement, and I was never afraid to be bold with my hair. People would ask me who did my hair, and I would reply, “Yondel’s bathroom.” I was constantly educating myself on the latest hair trends and fascinated with the power of the weave.

Why did you decide to create a business?
I received my undergrad degree in December 2008, so I was definitely a recession graduate. I realized that you had to be creative to make money in a poor economy. In 2009, I decided I wanted to learn how to make lace wigs since I was so fascinated with them. I realized that I had a lot of information and knowledge to share with the world, so Queens of Weave was officially created in fall of 2009. It was time that I stopped investing in wigs in the hair store and started investing in myself because I was learning that I knew more about the product [than] many beauty supply owners, so I decided to run an online wig business where I would create customized wigs, educate others on how to maintain them and how to make them.

What do you love most about it?
The thing that I love the most is that I am able to intertwine my two greatest passions, which are educating others and hair! There’s no greater feeling than checking in on a client and hearing that they love their wig or getting an e-mail out of the blue, when a client is telling me how good they feel in their custom-designed wig. I honestly and truly adore making a wig from start to finish. You go through excitement, then the getting impatient phase, then when complete, you look at something you designed from scratch that will make a positive impact on someone else’s life– that’s a lovely feeling!

What’s the most stressful aspect?
Honestly, I would have to say the most stressful aspect is trying to juggle everything at once. I teach part-time and am owner of Queens of Weave full-time. I can honestly admit that I am a workaholic, and I like to take control of everything. I am still learning how to balance my time and make sure I am finding time for me outside of the business.

What’s a typical day like for you?
A typical day for me is teaching English part-time from 8:30-1:30, then switching over to wig designer instantly. Sometimes, I have hair consultations scheduled from inside my car [that's] still parked at the school parking lot. I meet with specific clients face-to-face. Also, my day consists of, but is not limited to, following up with clients via phone, wig making, marketing, blog writing and putting in orders.

What advice or tips would you give someone who wants to do what you do?
I would tell someone trying to do what I do to research the industry first; also, I would tell them to build a team, a team that will help you succeed, as in a business coach, various contractors and a support team as well. Don’t try to do everything yourself to cut costs; you will go crazy. Plus, don’t worry about competition– everyone does things differently. Remember that life is way too short to hate on the next person and [that's] time wasted that can go into the business. Lastly, I would advise them to read my e-books; that way, they can avoid all the mistakes I made and learn new strategies that will save them time and energy.

Finish this sentence: This career is for you if _____
Job Title: Founder of Surprise Inside Gourmet Desserts What is Surprise Inside Gourmet Desserts? Surprise Inside Gourmet Desserts is a small baking company that specializes in gourmet (homemade) desserts. I bake cakes, cupcakes and cookies. I offer delicious red velvet, carrot, chocolate, vanilla and 7-UP cakes. My best sellers are the melt-in-your-mouth chocolate chip cookies. I believe in baking desserts that remind you of your grandmother’s kitchen on a Sunday afternoon. All desserts are available in vegan, and gluten-free desserts are available by special request. How did you become interested in baking? I became interested in baking when my grandmother handed me a box of cake mix one Sunday.
What is Surprise Inside Gourmet Desserts?

She suggested that I do my best. I was six-years-old, and I have been hooked ever since.

Why did you decide to create a business?
I decided to create a business because my friends and family suggested that I share my desserts with the world. I agreed.

What do you love most about it?
I love taking a few ingredients such as flour, sugar, eggs and butter and creating delicious cakes and cupcakes. I love that when I bake, all the stresses of my life fade away.

What is the most stressful aspect of it?
The most stressful aspect of my business is advertising. I have such a small budget. Getting repeat business and creating the perfect desserts are other stressful aspects of the business.

What is a typical day like for you?
Each day is different. One day may consist of baking a cake for 150 people, another day may consist of baking 200 mini cupcakes for a salon opening. There is advertising during the week and networking on the weekends.

What advice or tips would you give someone who wants to do what you do?
My advice to someone who wants to do this business is: have a passion for baking because you will be baking a lot. You must be willing to compromise your personal time. You do not need a degree but a willingness to succeed. You can have success if you never give up on your dream. Have fun!

The career is for you if _______
You have a passion for baking and you love to make people happy.
