bladdJob Title: Owner of the Ladd Agency (www.laddagency.net)

Why did you decide to pursue this field? I’ve been in event marketing for over six years and was making lots of money for other people. So when I got laid off at another Event Marketing agency, I decided to start my own business.

What do you love most about your job?  The people that I work with. I have a large database of staff through the U.S. I have Tradeshow Models, Actors, Emcees, Makeup Artists, Field Managers, Video Production teams and Print Models.

What is the most stressful aspect of your job? It’s not stressful because I truly love what I do. I get overwhelmed when I have multiple projects in front of me, but believe me, it will get done by the end of the day.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Consistent work for my staff and knowing that the clients are pleased with the talent I hired for their project or event.

What is the craziest thing that’s happened at work? Well, I pray before I start my day, so I limit any type of nonsense before it starts.

Describe a typical day at work for you. Reviewing new resumes and headshots, adding their information into my database. All talent are added in the state where they reside. I send out Independent Contractor paperwork plus 1099’s by email to all new talent. Conduct phone interviews with people in different cities. I have to be mindful of the time zones, especially calling the West Coast. In between that, I make calls to clients and potential clients. I submit new business proposals along with my pricing sheets. On special projects, I will need to submit a staffing quote if I’m needed to staff a large Tradeshow event or sporting event.

What advice or tips would you give someone who wants to do what you do? You must love being a talker and negotiator. If you have an eye for talent and fashion, put in the work, do some research and always be prayerful. God will give you direction.

Successful Sistas: Tawana Necole

18 09 2009

Successful Sistas is an interview series featuring successful women pursuing their dream careers.

Corporate chic 2Job Title: CEO of Corporate Chics, LLC and Sisters Striving for Excellence, Inc. (tawananecole.info, corporatechics.net, sistersstrivingforexcellence.org)

Job Description: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company and the organization; it involves overseeing the establishments of a yearly agenda, ensures initiaitives are executed and determines executive decisions in cases where it is deemed necessary and in the best interest of the company and organization.

Why did you decide to pursue this field? I am a natural born leader (literally). I am the first-born with two younger sisters, so leading and helping others are two things that I have always done. It comes naturally, and it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. I am a strong advocate for utilizing your gifts and talents and that, in turn, will become your resource.

I decided to pursue something that makes me happy and allows me to be me. I am filled with peace, and I don’t stress because I know that I am in the will of God for my life.

What do you love most about your job? I love being my own boss! I don’t take myself too seriously and that helps with building relationships and making great connections. I also don’t have to deal with the politics of working in a corporate arena. I set my own hours, and I work when I am able to. I don’t have to worry about being late or missing a day if my child is sick. I am not “scheduled” to work certain hours; I am not a threat to anyone- my work and credentials speak for who I am. I don’t have to conform to the culture of a company and how it’s ran, and the list goes on and on.

What is the most stressful aspect of your job? The “balancing act” is the most stressful. Coporate Chics is a new company and brand, therefore marketing it properly is vital and is the only way to become successful. However, I am a mother to a three-month-old and a three-year-old, so considering my kids and providing them with the quality time needed is sometimes hectic. But through great organizational skills,  I am beginning to master Multi-tasking (that’s right, with a capital M!)

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Being able to connect a woman with someone who possibly could help with her business or career brings me so much joy. Helping others start a business or mentoring a young female by providing direction and focus on her vision is not only rewarding, I feel like it is my purpose and part of my destiny. Being of service to others and helping them focus their dreams and actually coaching them into making it a reality ensures success, and everyone benefits. I never want to climb the ladder alone.

What is the craziest thing that’s happened at work? Any obstacle or barrier is always seen as an opportunity to grow. A few weeks ago, I received an email from someone asking for some assistance with self-esteem. Well, when I contacted this anonymous person, he or she was interested knowing about some type of vintage corset. The person began to explain that he/she had surgery to enhance his/her breast size and needed it because his/her body was really not portioned properly. Being a nanny as well as other off-the-wall topics came up; however, I politely explained the type of business services I provide and got off the phone shaking my head! It was scary and crazy, but I was professional and that helped me overcome and not say the wrong thing.

Describe a typical day at work for you. A typical day involves responding to emails or emailing potential prospects or sponsors, updating material for social media networks, conference calls, planning and executing certain projects, assisting individuals in my network, updating both websites, tweeting, blogging and producing material for marketing the brand or the nonprofit organization.

What advice or tips would you give someone who wants to do what you do? Being focused, determined and ambitious is extremely important. You can not allow anything to stop you from pursuing your goals. Believe that no matter what happens or how things look, you must strive to make your dreams a reality. You will be told no (at first) more than you are told yes, but if you keep knocking on doors, you will eventually receive that one yes. And that one ‘yes’ will trump all of the people that didn’t believe in you or told you no.

Finish this sentence: This career is for you if: you have faith

Successful Sistas- Gabbie McGee

20 07 2009

Successful Sistas is an interview series featuring successful women pursuing their dream careers.

gabbie m Job Title: I have three answers in a way; my life is composed of 3-M’s- Marriage, Motherhood and Music. So, in short, I guess my job (in life) is to be the best wife I can be, a great Mother and an example to my children all while making music that mirrors my life and my commitment to my faith, family and community. But the job that pays the bills and helps to keep the lights on is my profession as a professional vocalist. (gabbiemcgee.com)

Job Description: I am an independent Soul-Jazz artist. I have been told that I’m a “self-contained” artist because I write, produce and compose my own music. As an independent artist, I am responsible for a lot of my “own” stuff. Together with my husband, I manage my career, put together my own marketing material and book my own performances.

Why did you decide to pursue this field? Well according to my mother, I’ve been singing since I was three. I have a very close relationship with my grandfather, who is also a singer, and he always tells me to do what comes naturally. He said to me once “if your chosen profession is something that comes to you without thinking too hard, then that is what you should be doing.” Singing is the one thing in my life I have always been able to do; it’s like breathing…I have to do it! So, why not do what I have to do for a living? That’s how I see it.

What do you love most about your job? I love to see people’s responses to the songs that God puts on my heart. Because music is the universal language, your words and feelings are not just your words; they belong to so many people who have either witnessed you experience or have shared in the same experience. I love the connection that music brings to so many people.

What is the most stressful aspect of your job? Sometimes the balancing act of it all can be tough, but I’m incredibly blessed to have one of the most supportive husbands in the world. He’s a recording engineer so he understands the intricacies of the music business. We work together as a team in our careers as well as in our family life. I’m often faced with deadlines, due dates and other challenges, but I’m thankful for the solid support system God has given me. Our family, church family and friends play huge roles in helping me keep it all together.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?  I find gratification in knowing I’m contributing something good to the world. I pride myself in creating music that is positive and inspirational; so to know that something God put on my heart to sing and share has the ability to brighten someone’s day is very encouraging to me.

Describe a typical day at work for you. Well, as an independent artist a lot of my “work” depends on people knowing that I’m “here”.  I spend a great deal of my day networking and communicating with people all over the world who share my love for music.  Yes, I’m a Tweeter, a Facebook Head, a Myspace Junkie and I’m always updating and adding things to my website www.gabbiemcgee.com.  You’ve got to stay connected to the people who support you…that’s very important .

What advice or tips would you give someone who wants to do what you do? Nurture your gift; study and learn the business; watch and observe other artists who are similar to you, but be sure of your music identity. Practice really does make perfect. Vocal coaching, healthy vocal habits and proper breathing techniques are all key components to having longevity as a vocalist.

Finish this sentence: This career is for you if: you want to present the “you” you are to the world.  Independent artistry is often a long hard road, but it’s worth it to be able to be your own boss. I sing the songs exactly the way God gives them to me. I don’t have to re-write them because someone doesn’t share my view or perspective, and on stage I dress in a way that is befitting a young, married mother of two. People come to my shows to hear me sing and to share my experiences through the music; they didn’t come to see the things that should be reserved for my husband. As an independent artist, I have complete control and the freedom to be all I was born to be. My career is truly “ mine”.

Successful Sista: Sarah B.

9 04 2009

Successful Sistas is an interview series featuring successful women pursuing their dream careers.

Job Title: Seamstress and Crafter for Random CatGirl. [www.randomcatgirl.com]

Job Description: Making and designing accessories with an Asian flair.

Why did you decide to pursue this field? I’ve always loved making things and am an artist by trade, so it seemed natural to take my artistic side and combine it with my crafty side and start making hot purses and such in the style I love. After growing bored with my last job in insurance, I finally took the plunge and started my business. Oh, and did I mention I always wanted to be a fashion designer when I was a kid?

What do you love most about your job? I love the fact that I can start and stop my workday as I need. I have a four-year-old at home, a seven-year-old in school, and they need me just as much as my work does. It’s nice to take a moment to sing a silly song or still be able to help out with homework and not be dog tired from work.

What is the most stressful aspect of your job? When the sewing machine decides to jam for the umpteenth time. Or when the glue from my hair accessories doesn’t seem to want to dry. After that, it’s all gravy.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Through my hair accessories, I’m helping spread the word and preserving a dying Japanese techniue. [You can see several on Sarah's flickr account]. They’re flowers with each petal being made from an individual piece of fabric. It’s pretty nice that I’ve learned how to make them.

What’s the craziest thing that has happened at work? I’ve sat down for at least half an hour peeling glue from each and every one of my fingers.

Describe a typical day at work for you. I wake up at 6:20 A.M. to get my eldest daughter up and ready to head out to school. By 8:30 A.M., I’m on the computer, checking e-mails, any orders that were placed during the night and updating one of my blogs. By 11 A.M., I try to either be at the sewing machine, making petals for the flowered hair accessories or designing the jewelry. A good day for me is producing at least three items. Now, all of this is interrupted by making lunch, cooking dinner and bedtime, so all times are approximate.

What advice or tips would you give to someone who wants to do what you do? To have a home-based business, you must be disciplined and have some time management skills. Also, you’ll have to put on many hats so seek out the knowledge or people that can make you look as good as possible.

Finish this sentence- this career is for you if___ You love fashion and daring designs.
