Flyy Fridays: Tracee Ellis Ross

6 11 2009

Hands down, Tracee is my favorite style icon! I even love her look as Joan on Girlfriends.  She always looks classy and put together. Pretty much every time I see her, I think, I’d wear that. And don’t get me started on that hair…Anyway, here are some of my favorite looks:

Flyy Fridays: Rosario Dawson

25 09 2009

Two things I love about Rosario Dawson: 1. She believes in being open to every possibility, and she thinks that every experience is worthwhile; 2. To me, she exudes confidence, and she is who she is-unapologetically.

And on top of that, she’s a fabulous actress and has played many different roles. She’s appeared in over 40 films including Rent, He Got Game, Jose and the Pussycats and Men in Black 2. Rosario also believes in giving back- she’s involved with the Lower East Side Girls Club and supports the ONE Campaign, Amnesty International, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays and more.

Awards she’s won one include an NAACP Image Award (2009), Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival (2006) and Rising Star Award at the Black Film Festival (2004). She was nominated for several more.

Flyy Fridays: Jaslene Gonzalez

11 09 2009

Jaslene is the cycle 8 winner of America’s Next Top Model. She’s the first Latina to win the competition.

One thing I love about Jaslene is her perserverance. She had initially been a contestant on ANTM cycle 7 and was eliminated, but that didn’t stop her from coming back and ultimately claiming the title.

She also teamed with Liz Clairborne’s Love is Not Abuse campaign to speak against domestic violence, which she’s survived.

And I think she’s absolutely gorgeous!

Flyy Fridays: Sanaa Lathan

7 08 2009

Today’s Flyy Friday is a little late (sorry guys), but today our beauty is Sanaa Lathan.

I like Sanaa because she has a classic look and always looks well put together. She’s also a fabulous actress, and she said something in an Essence issue back in 2006 (I know, tha t’s old!) that I really like:

I won’t do something I’m not passionate about. It’s hard for me to work just for money, which I’ve paid for in the past. The work is more important; the money will come.”

Flyy Fridays- india.arie

24 07 2009

I really heart india.arie. She seems to have some much confidence in and love for herself. She always represents herself to the fullest and doesn’t change her style or who she is for any standards- and I love her for that.

And her music is just…I love it. Everytime I listen to her, I feel (not to sound cliche or anything) peaceful, calm, even motivated. I feel like everything will be fine, and I don’t have a care in the world.

Flyy Fridays: Swimsuits- What to wear (and not)

10 07 2009

Hola, chicas! I got these tidbits from msn.com.

one-piece-swimsuit

White swimsuits are a do. It especially makes darker skin pop!

Sunburn- don’t. Slap on some sunscreen. That includes you, too, chocolate divas.

Mixing and matching your tops and bottoms, i.e., striped top and solid bottom, is a do.

Wearing a thong bikini? Eh, not so much. It’s a don’t- too much skin.

To little top and wedgie-inducing bottoms. Obviously (I hope it’s obvious) a don’t.

It’s always a do to wear a swimsuit appropriate for your body type.

Don’t wear heels to the beach or pool. Need I say more?

Check out more here.

Flyy Fridays- Farrah Fawcett

26 06 2009

As you all, know we lost three icons this week (Rest in Peace, MJ, Farrah and Ed).

In honor of her death, I decided to make ‘Flyy Fridays’ about Farrah. She did a lot throughout her life, acting in several films and TV shows. Some of her achievements:

  • She was one of the original Charlie’s Angels.
  • She even had iconic hair- her layered hair was such a big trend with women in the U.S. that a Farrah Fawcett shampoo was created.
  • Fawcett also received a few Emmy nominations.

Here are a couple of pics I like:

Flyy Fridays: Tattoo Luv

19 06 2009

One thing you may not know about me is I heart tattoos. Although many people don’t like them [hi Ma], I think they are [or should] be an expression of who you are. I only have two right now, but I want at least 4 more [hey, those things are expensive!]. Anyway, here are some tattoos I love- including my own.

Flyy Fridays: Nappy Heads

12 06 2009

Yesterday I wrote a post about why I went natural. Now, I’m going to tell you why I decided to loc my hair. It’s short and sweet. And what I previously posted on MySpace:

I was [and am] starting to feel myself transitioning into the “best” me- I have better, more positive relationships now, I’m learning to not let fear of what people say/think and just fear in general run my life. And I’m just trying to work on myself in all aspects of my life. I’m finally just living my life the way I want to. So I decided that since, to me, hair symbolizes [to a degree] who I am, locs are a way for me to symbolize the growth and changes in my life.

Since I’m writing all this stuff about hair, I decided to make Flyy Fridays about women who wear their hair happily nappy and proud!  I just love to see women with big, kinky afros or locs.  It just screams ’self-confidence’, ‘pride’, ‘diva’ and ‘fabulosity’ to me.
