Question of the Week- May 17

May 17, 2010
By Jamie

The other day, I was reading a forum topic where someone asked why a woman with a college degree would choose to be a stay at home mom/wife.

Now, I don’t knock any woman’s decision, whether she decides to work outside or inside the home. And I suppose some of those women obtain a degrees to have something to fall back on just in case something happens, and they need to work outside the home. Makes sense. But for me, I don’t think staying at home, taking care of kids and other “home duties” would work (even though I work from home). I think it would drive me crazy.

Anyway, this week’s question:

Would you be (are you) a stay at home mom/wife, particularly if you had (have) a college degree? Why/why not? And fellas, would you/do you want your wife to stay home? Why/why not?

As always, I love hearing from you, so leave your thoughts!

Personally I do both and it can be a nightmare. I start my day off getting the kids up bath, dress, feed them. Get my oldest off to school and prepare the house for my younger sons early intervention. When she leaves I take care of my son, check for orders to fill on my website(none so far, lol), cook for later on straighten up and get ready for work for afternoon to evening. My husband barely helps he only watches or takes care of them when I am physically out of the house. When I come home I have to iron, bathe, and put them to bed. This is my life and I have a law degree. The only time I get a break are on my days off but the only thing that is taken out of my day is my pay job. Its hard either way but staying at home is def. harder.

Ideally, I want to work from home/stay at home while my children are in elementary school. Despite my dislike of children I have a strong desire to be PTA president, classroom mom and the like (ironic). But I don’t want to completely abandon the working world. With my schedule as is, raising a child would be impossible.

I have a college degree and I am looking for a job but have been blessed to be home with my kids all these years. I have volunteered at their schools and I hope I have made an impact on you.

I’m currently in undergrad, again, finishing a B.S. in Sociology and I’m a homeschool mom. I plan to go on to grad school and continue homeschooling my son. Attaining higher education is not always about a means to an end, i.e. a well paying career. Some of us simply enjoy the self improvement that comes with learning. Eventually, I’ll ease back into the workforce as a librarian (an MLS is the plan for grad school), but I’m always a mom first. That’s whether I work in or outside the home and currently I work from home while wearing those other hats. Being a SAHM doesn’t mean I can’t be educated. Having degrees doesn’t mean I have to or should make an outside career my top priority and motherhood an afterthought. It just makes me a well educated SAHM that my son will hopefully admire. :)
