Question of the Week- Feb. 15

February 15, 2010
By

If you’re like me, your parents/grandparents/uncles/aunts/etc. told you (or are telling you) to “go to school (college) and get a good job.”

I’ve always wondered what a ‘good’ job is: is it one in which you earn six figures and have benefits, one that is always “in demand” (i.e., teaching, health care) or one you actually like? I suppose a ‘good’ job means different things to different people; during my parents’ time (who, by the way, they are older), a good job is one that is steady/consistent and one that covers all your expenses and you maybe have a little left over.

So, this week’s question: What is your definition of a good job? Do your parents/older relatives think you have a ‘good’ job? As always, I love to read your comments : 0 )

In my opinion a good job is one that you look forward to going to everyday, one that gives you a sense of purpose. I personally would love to find a job that I could get both good pay and be happy. I’m majoring in CIS which I got into for the possible pay. After being in school much longer than I want to be I figured out the reason I havent finished was because my heart just isnt in it. I have a passion for houses so once I’m done fooling around with trying to get my degree in CIS then I gonna get my real estate license when I figure out where I want to live. So I’m looking forward to being happy and being paid well :-) . I’m unemployed right now so to answer the second question… NO!

Family and friends thinks I have a horrible job because of the long hours and low pay. Everyone tells me to go teach. Compared to a reporter, teachers are balling lol. But my heart wouldn’t be in it. Mainly, I don’t like large groups of children. My parents always hint I should go into PR where the pay is much better. I’m not a fan of the public therefore my relations would be strained. At the end of the day, I am happy to be a poor reporter. I love what I do. A good job is one you love. It’s not about the money or prestige, but about wanting to get up in the morning to go to work.

I love this question! My parents have always wanted me to get a “good job” which in their minds meant me working for the government. Sitting at a desk from 9a-5p is my idea of torture. I love being an entrepreneur but since I work from home, they don’t really think I have a job. At first it bothered me but now I am content with my lifestyle, whether they are or not.
I think people of our generation are veering away from traditional jobs which offer a certain a level of stability but at what cost. It seems that more people that I know are choosing to follow their passion regardless of the hours and pay because they value personal fullfillment.

To me a good job is one that pays me enough to live reasonably well, has good benefits, and at the end of the day leaves me with a feeling that I did something worthwhile. It also helps if I look forward to going to work each day and enjoy working with the people I spend most of my day with. This sums up the job I have now. I’ve been with the association I’m with for 13 years now and have been promoted three times. I absolutely love my current position. I don’t make a ton of money but the benefits and working with a great team thats more like a second family more than make up for it.

My mother and the rest of my family definitely think I have a good job.

Thanks for your replies, ladies! I’m with ya’ll- a good job is one that you love and can’t wait to get up in the morning to go to (at least on most days). A lot of relatives on my daddy’s side are teachers, so I’ve been hearing the whole “be a teacher” thing my entire life. But I’m like you, Toni, I don’t like large groups of kids either- or small groups lol.

Although I’m not balling out of control (yet, lol), I love what I do- even though my parents don’t understand…
