Today is the Great American Smokeout, an event held by the American Cancer Society. It’s reserved to help individuals quit smoking and using tobacco products for at least a day hoping they will stop completely. This occassion also helps raise awareness about the harm of smoking and the successful methods available to help one quit.
In 1971, Arthur Mullaney, a resident of Massachusettes, asked individuals to stop smoking for a day and contribute the money they would have used on tobacco to a local high school. The editor of the Monticello Times “led the charge to create Minnesota’s first D-Day (Don’t Smoke Day).” The initiative gained momentum and the California chapter of the American Cancer Society convinced about one million smokers to stop for a day on November 18, 1976. The ACS made it a nationwide envent in 1977.
