Sadie Hawkins Day is an American Folk Event created in Al Capp’s Li’l Abner comic strip on November 15, 1937. According to the comic strip, Sadie Hawkins was “the homeliest gal in the hills,” and she was tired of waiting for guys to “come a courting.” Her father was concerned about her living at home the rest of her life, so he established the first annual Sadie Hawkins Day, a foot race in which single women pursued the town’s bachelor’s with matrimony as the result.
By the end of the 1930s, the event was very popular, and in 1939, Life magazine reported that 200+ colleges held Sadie Hawkins Day events. The basis of the day is that females ask the guy of their choice out on a date. Because of its popularity and the many fan letters Capp received, Sadie Hawkins Day became a yearly event in his strip in November.

This was a really cool post! I never knew that. I really enjoyed reading about it. Maybe I should go to Sadie Hawkins day events and find myself a man – well maybe not. lol. Still, it is a cool background story.
