Eight years ago today, a tragedy occurred that will forever be etched in our memories and hearts.
Patriot Day is an annual observance on September 11. Its purpose is to honor the memory of the 2,974 casualties during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
Former President George W. Bush signed Joint Resolution 71 into law in 2001 as Public Law 107-89 (under the resolution, September 11 is selected as Patriot Day). Using the power from the resolution, Bush proclaimed September 11, 2002 as Patriot Day.
Every year, the President is asked to deliver a proclamatation summoning:
- Local and state governments and citizens to honor Patriot Day with appropriate activities and programs.
- All departments, agencies and other interested individuals to display the flag half-mast to pay tribute to the lives lost on September 11.
- Americans to have a moment of silence starting at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time as this is the time the first plane crashed.
