In honor of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, ths month I’ll write about a successful Asian and/or Pacific American woman.
Who she is: International fashion designer of clothing, shoes and perfumes.
Brief bio: Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1964, Sui’s fashion involvement started at an early age; she dressed her dolls and her neighbor’s toy soldiers for her own version of the Academy Awards. Ultimately she broadened her fashion interest that included designing her own clothing and cutting fashion magazine pages for inspiration.
When she graduated from high school, Sui attended Parsons School of Design in New York City. While there, she found a partner and close friend, Steven Meisel, one of the world’s best fashion photographers. She presented six orginal pieces at the Boutique Show and immediately received an order from Macy’s and launched her own business out of her apartment in 1980.
She has also:
- Premiered her first runway show which featured her signature “head-to-toe” look and caused the New York Times to declare it a “pastiche of hip and haute styles” [1991].
- Opened her own boutique in SoHo, whick showed Sui’s distinct taste [1992].
- Won the prestigious CFSA Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent [1993].
- Her shoe line, Anna Sui Shoes, premiered on her runway [1997].
- Named to Time Magazine’s list of this decade’s top five fashion icons.
- Fronted a campaign to ‘Save the Garment Center’, which was highlighted at Fashion Week [2008].
- Won the CDFA [Council of Fashion Designers of America] Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award [2009].
