Flyy Fridays: 10 Summer Fashion Rules to Unfollow

29 05 2009

I know, I’m sooo late with this, and I totally stole this idea from Shine from Yahoo! [thanks!]

Anyway, so, although it’s not technically the beginning of summer, it’s the beginning of summer. Or it sure feels like it in GA. Anywhoo, I’m sure you’ve all heard the fashion faux pas of summer time, but this article disputes them.

Myth 1: No white after Labor Day

Myth 2: Suede is only good in winter.

Myth 3: Gold and silver do not belong together.

Myth 4: You can’t wear black to a summer wedding –> I know I plan to!

Myth 5: Patent leather is not to be worn year round.

Myth 6: Wedges are not acceptable dress shoes.

Myth 7: Tan is sexier than pale.

Myth 8: Shorts must always be casual

Myth 9: Your bag and shoes must match

Myth 10: Thou shalt not wear wool in the summer

Letting Go

29 05 2009

Hey girls!

I just got done with this book called Prospering Woman. It’s an old book but still very relevant today. Anyway, it reminded me of some things I think I had pushed to the corners of my mind. It’s all about how to be a ‘prospering woman’- whatever that is for you. One thing she talked about was how we need to let go of things, i.e., baggage, to make room for our forthcoming success/blessings/whatever you call it.

And I kinda had a light bulb moment. I have a theory about why my life is not exactly how I want it to be[and for the record, I don't really feel outside circumstances, i.e., the recession, necessarily has to affect me.] For example, my career. I haven’t fully let go of my old job/beliefs about jobs and what I can do. I still work in Athens [2 more days! = ], most of my belongings were still in Athens, and I’m feeling pressure to find a “real” job. What does that say to the Universe/God? To me, it says I’m holding on to Athens and this job I have at the moment, and I’m holding on to the belief/idea that I need another job to sustain me for a while. I’m saying that I don’t think I can make it as a full-time freelancer- right now.

Well, now I’m changing my thought process…my pastor preached on Sunday that faith is not believing something will happen, but knowing it can happen. So, I know I can make full-time money writing right now. And I don’t need another job- some might call me crazy, but I call me prosperous. And I can honestly say I’m starting to feel better about leaving this job and town and moving on. I feel like I’m closing a chapter in my life. And a fresh, new one starts at the beginning of a new month, no less. However, I won’t say that I haven’t or won’t feel discouraged by outsiders, but I will push it all to the side.

What’s the point of me writing this? I just want you to know, sometimes you have to let go of old, safe and comfortable things and prepare yourself for some bigger and better blessings in your life. And I hope that’s what you take away from this post.

Ciao bellas!

Progress Report?

28 05 2009

So, I said I would update about how I was doing with the goals and what not. And I apologize, it’s a little late, but I digress…

  • I sent 16 emails to businesses
  • I’ve been networking online and I’ve found off-line networking spots on meetup.com.
  • I’ve sent a couple of queries.
  • Got promotional stuff ready for the Community Fellowship Festival that’s this Saturday
  • Blog stuff…

*Vent begins*

This week, however, was not the best when it came to getting things done. I had a headache for like three days, which I attribute to me indulging in Chinese food not taking anything before indulging in Chinese food [MSG gives me migraines, apparently]. So, of course, I didn’t really feel like doing anything. I mean, I researched a little, tried networking, but yeah.

Anyway, when I finally felt better, I didn’t know what direction I was going in. I attribute this to me not writing down my weekly goals like I usually do. It was partly because I was at my boyfriend’s place, and I was trying to coordinate moving  my ish out of Athens[which took like 8 hours total- real talk], but I should have at least made goals for today and the weekend. And I will- tonight. I just feel like I had a somewhat unproductive week. Oh, well…you live and learn…blah, blah…

The good news is I got [part of] my final check early and I got a bonus- woot, woot! My things are not in Athens. AND tonight is my last overnight at the shelter; tomorrow is my last day at the thrift store!!! Super excited about that…

*Vent complete*

There you have it. I’ll have my June goals posted on Sunday, hopefully. And if you happen to live in Hartwell, live near Hartwell or want to come to Hartwell, you should come to the Community Fellowship Festival from 9a-5p this Saturday [May 30]. It’s in the parking lot at Aaron’s Rental [across from Wal-Mart].

Ciao peeps!

Spend like a millionaire, frugally

28 05 2009

On Yahoo this morning, I saw a post about how frugal millionaires really help with the economy. Why? They’ve always been smart with their money, and they haven’t lost it and had to remake it.

The article, How to Spend Like a Frugal Millonaire, says millionaires are unique thinkers when it comes to spending. For example, they are able to easily delay their need for gratification when buying, they make living below their means painless, and they don’t like wasting anything, particularly money.

Other tips are:

  • If you eat out, bring half the meal home to eat later. Or opt to eat better and less expensively at home.
  • If you purchase a new item of clothing, donate something used.
  • When it comes to buying electronics, by low-end things that has necessary functions you need instead of the more expensive ones. Buy refurbished whenever you can.

Successful Sistas: Dirty Dish Towels

27 05 2009

Successful Sistas is an interview series featuring successful women pursuing their dream careers.

dirty dish towels groupJob Title:  [Vicki is] Co-owner of Dirty Dish Towels with her three sisters [www.dirtysdishtowels.com]

Job Description: Designer of funny and naughty embroidery designs, seamstress, embroider, web design and marketing.

Why did you decide to pursue this field? It was just an idea we had that sounded like fun. We researched online and found it to be a unique idea. After countless bottles of wine and laughter, we brought it to life online. We all have other full-time jobs as well.

What do you love most about your job?  The creatve process is fun, and I enjoy the humor that we add to the every day kitchen work. An added bonus is the aprons are really cute as well as being a bit naughty!

What is the most stressful aspect of your job? Right now, we only have one embroidery machine, so I’m the only one doing that portion and most of the sewing , so when we have a bunch of orders, it can get a little stressful. We hope to add another embroidery machine for one of my sisters; and they are starting to do some of the aprons on borders on the towels so that helps quite a bit.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? The finished product is so cute and hearing from our customers how much they like it is very rewarding.

What is the craziest thing that’s every happened at work? Well, I have pictures posted on Flikr and belong to different apron groups on there. It seems that there a lot of “men” that like to wear aprons and take nasty pictures of themselves wearing women’s aprons doing nasty things, and it’s all just a little too icky, so I have had to block them. I don’t know, maybe I shouldn’t, but I just don’t want to think of them wearing one of my aprons for their photo shoots and extracurricular activities. They call themselves sissy maids.

Descibe a typical day at work for you. Well… I work full time at my other job…this is more on the weekends and nights that I’m not working there. I enjoy trying a new apron pattern and bringing a new embroidery design to life for a towel, although that can take hours and hours to get it just right.

What advice or tips would you give to someone who wants to do what you do? Well, we have definitely been flying by the seat of our pants here with none of us knowing anything about web design or running an online business, so I would say to definitely do some research or take some classes on that. We have been doing some marketing on Twitter, MySpace, Flikr, Facebook and Etsy so finding all you can about these and/or other social networking sites would be beneficial as well.

Finish this sentence: This is the career for you if__: This is the career for you if you have small children at home and you want to be able to stay home with them and you don’t need to make a lot of money. We are a fledgling business here, and it takes a while to get your name out there and gain some recognition before the orders really start pouring in.

26 05 2009

In honor of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, ths month I’ll write about a successful Asian and/or Pacific American woman.
