30 04 2009

Before I go into my goals for May, I’m going to review how I did last month:

  • Send emails/make calls/visit at least 20 businesses- I’m not sure it was exactly 20, but I know it was close.
  • Network, network, network! – Iwrote articles on I See Color and networked there. I also getting more active on Absolute Write and I’ve been adding friends on Myspace and 20 Something Bloggers.
  • Maintain blog; have own domain- I’ve been maintaing blog, but I obviously don’t have a domain name yet.
  • Write queries/send/get at least one accepted- I got one idea accepted
  • Promote Mocha Writer- been trying to do so on the social networking sites, but I need to do better.
  • At least four Demand Studios articles- uh..about that. I did like 2.
  • Write dating article/send/get accepted- and about this…
  • Fundraiser stuff [promote/confirm some acts/sponsors & venue]- this may be on hold for a minute.
  • Now, on to May:

    • Get 2-3 article assignments [newspaper/magazine/website]
    • Get three regular/consistent clients for business writing. Also, continue getting more business and clients regularly.
    • Make- brace yourselves- $1000.
    • Maintain forcoloredgurls, get domain and promote!
    • Network like crazy- online and in real life. Also, promote mochawriter.com like crazy.

    Wish me luck! = )

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month

    27 04 2009

According to childwelfare.gov, child abuse and neglect are defined by Federal and State laws.

The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act [CAPTA] is the federal legislation that gives minimum standards that states have to incorporate in their statutory definitions of child abuse and neglect. Its definition refers to:

“Any recent act or failure to act on the parent or caretaker, which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation, or an act or failure to act which presents and imminent risk of serious harm.” [more definitions on child abuse can be found at childwelfare.gov]

So if you don’t have any kids, you may be wondering what you can do to help. I found ways we can prevent child abuse on the Prevent Child Abuse America website:

Be a friend to a parent you know. You can do this by asking how their children are doing; if a parent seems like their struggling, you can offer to run errands, babysit or just listen to them vent.

Be a friend to a child you know. Learn their names, smile when you talk to them, ask about their lives and just generally show interest in them.

Talk to your neighbors about looking out for the other children. Try to get everyone involved and show that you are involved as well.

Give used clothing, furniture and toys to other families who may need them. This may help relieve their finanical burdens that parents sometimes take out on their kids.

    Kick off those stilettos…

    25 04 2009

red-stilettoIt’s National Foot Health Awareness Month, so of, course, I’m writing a post about foot health.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, footwear has been designed to meet the real and perceived needs of our feet dating from Ancient Egypt.

And did you know a typical day of walking brings a force equal to several hundred tons on them?

Of course, you as a woman know how much pressure [pun intended] we put on our feet [and I understand, some of my, er, 'vertically-challenged gals feel they need them]. Some of our issues result in wearing high heels (i.e., heels more than two inches). Podiatrists believe such heels are “medically unsound and attribute postural and safety problems to their use.”

So, what’s a girl to do?

Well, you can limit the time you wear these abusive shoes by switching it up with sneakers or cute flats [my personal fave].  You can also vary the heel size in pumps you wear. Or if you insist on wearing your stilettos, keep a comfy pair of shoes on your person [or in your car or office].

Here are more reasons why you may want to ditch your heel habit: High Heels are Not an Everyday Shoe.
