According to the National Women’s History Project, women’s history was basically an unknown subject in schools and the general public in the 1970s until the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (CA) Commission of the Status of Women decided to do something about it.
The task force started a Women’s History Week celebration in 1978 and selected the week of March 8 to make International Women’s Day the center of the observance.
The National Women’s History Project appealed to Congress to expand the national observation to the whole month of March 1987. The National Women’s History Month Resolution has been supported with approval in the House and Senate every since. Every year, activities and programs have become more widespread as ideas and information have been expanded and shared.
