Why did you decide to pursue this field? It’s a field that is rewarding, allows me to experience adrenaline-filled days, requires that I be a life-long learner; also, job security and financial security.
Job description: In a nutshell, she assists laboring mothers in the delivery of their babies.
What do you love most about your job? People interaction and the ability to positively impact their lives.
What is the most stressful aspect of your job? Knowing that there are two lives depending on me to be aware of any potential problems that may arise.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Having healthy mothers and babies. It’s amazing to see the reactions of mom’s who are seeing their child that they’ve been carrying for 9 months for the very first time.
Describe a typical day at work for you: It varies from day to day. It’s a 12 hour shift. I manage pain, give meds if needed, coach through labor and delivery. There’s really too much to go into here.
What advice or tips would you give to someone who wants to do what you do? Nursing is very rewarding but is also very challenging. You should definitely have stamina…I’m on my feet a lot. Lunch breaks are never at a guaranteed time. You should enjoy working with people and be ready to do a lot of teaching.
