Michelle O. disses black designers?

First Lady Obama rocking Isabel Toledo's design at the Inauguration

According to  the New York Magazine website, The Black Artists Association is not  very happy with First Lady Obama for not wearing clothes by black designers.

Co-founder Amnau Eele, a former runway model, told Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) , “It’s fine and good if you want to be all ‘Kumbaya’ and ‘We Are the World’ by representing all different countries. But if you are going to have Isabel Toledo do the inauguration dress, and Jason Wu do the evening gown, why not have Kevan Hall, B Michael, Stephen Burrows or any of the other black designers do something too?” Eele plans to make a formal appeal to Michelle’s office.

Eele was then asked if maybe Mrs. Obama was looking at the world colorlessly; she said, “It’s one thing to look at the world without color but she had seven slots to wear designer clothes. Why wasn’t she wearing the clothes of a black designer? That was our moment.”

I don’t think Michelle should have necessarily chosen a black designer, I mean, it’s not like she said ‘I’m going to look at some designs and pick ones by non-black designers.’ It’s really kind of ridiculous if you ask me. She wanted to look fab, she did, the end.

What do you think?

Equal pay bill!

Obama signs equal pay bill

By Phillip Elliot (Associated Press Writer)

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama signed an equal-pay bill into law Thursday before cheering labor and women leaders who fought hard for it and the woman whose history-making lawsuit gave impetus to the cause.

Obama, choosing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act as the first bill to sign as president, called it a “wonderful day” and declared that ending pay disparities between men and woman an issue not just for women, but for all workers.

With Ledbetter standing by his side, Obama said she lost more than $200,000 in salary, and even more in pension and Social Security benefits losses that she “still feels today.” He then signed the measure that effectively nullifies a 2007 Supreme Court decision and makes it easier for workers to sue for discrimination by allowing them more time to do so.

Successful Sistas: Carmen “Mimi” Fleming

26 01 2009

Successful Sistas is an interview series featuring successful women pursuing their dream careers.

100_4251Job Title: CEO, CMO, CFO, COO, Chief ‘Do it All’ Officer of Tomoka’s Twists

Job Description: Designer of Tomoka’s Twists ~ Unique, fashionable, and functional hair accessories created especially for natural hair and dreadlocks.

Why did you decide to pursue your career/job? Sometimes people look to their jobs to measure their success. They may think that reaching the top of the Ivory Tower is how you succeed. It is if that’s your own business. But I am an artist at heart and did not major in the arts but the sciences at Virginia Commonwealth Virginia. A biology major with a chemistry minor did not seem to put me in position to be a grand author or painter. When I sought out a career, I chose chemical labs because no animals would be hurt in the process.

After years of being bored and over-worked, I took a Sisterlock class and launched Tomoka’s Twists. A month later, I looked at my bank account and counted the months I could live off of without working, and I quit my job. It was scary because I have a house, car and a dog. A few months later, I had Tomoka’s Twists going and a few clients as well. I looked for a job and took a temporary lab job and eventually was hired [there]. During those laboratory jobs, I learned that I did not want to move up to a supervisor or manager. I had no true interest in the product; it passed or failed. So I found my life work in Tomoka’s Twists.

What do you love most about it?The design process is my favorite part of my work. I love beads and matching them up to come up with something unique. I get an adrenaline rush when I’m looking for beads. Sometimes I can see how I want the TT to look just by looking at the beads. The TT’s are very easy to design for me. They are already unique as is, so it’s basically placement that defines them. The earrings can be challenging; they have to have an impact because earrings are everywhere. I have to be as creative as I can in a little space while keeping them in tune with the coordinating Twists. That requires me to be as relaxed and imaginative as I can be.

What is the most stressful aspect of your job? I have had stressful moments. But I have found that I have allowed situations to become stressful for me because I did not have the answer or solutions. Once I experienced something that I found stressful, I would seek the advice of my parents, my boyfriend or co-workers.

What is the most rewarding aspect? What I enjoy the most about working for myself is the feedback from customers. It is very rewarding to make something and read blog posts about them. I am very humbled when people send photos and leave such wonderful comments. I’ve been to a few forums and seen threads with Tomoka’s Twists mentioned throughout.

What is the craziest thing that has ever happened to you at work?I have a dog and all by herself she is funny. I do my designing and orders in the wee hours of the night, and she tries very hard to stay awake. While I was sitting on the floor trying to come up with a new pair of earrings, she sat on the love seat behind me looking over my shoulder. As I began to see the earrings come to form, I felt her hand on my back. I turned around and moved it. I picked up my tools and started again. Hand on my back. One more time I moved her hand. One more time, hand on my back. I started to get aggravated with her, and then I stopped and switched my thinking. She wasn’t hurting me, and it didn’t bother me. I said to myself, ‘maybe she’s trying to give me a pat on the back.’

Describe a typical day at work for you. I get home at about 5:30 am and immediately walk the dog. I slither upstairs with my laptop and turn it on to Twitter. I shower or not and then greet the ‘good morning tweeple’. I make orders, and I try hard to stay up to go to the post office; sometimes I can, most of the times I can’t. I’ll eat and go to sleep. When I wake, it’s a rush to get ready for my job; I have to be there at 5pm. Once I get to work, it’s Twitter, Ning groups, Facebook, and email time! It’s gotten so bad that I hardly look for beads anymore while I’m at work.

What advice or tips do you have for someone who wants to do what you do? When designing any product, the key two questions to ask is “Why is it helpful?”, and “How is it different?”. With beauty and fashion products, the answer to the first question is people like to adorn and enhance their natural beauty with jewelry and other accessories. If you say, “Oh I can make that and sell it”, then how many other people have said that too, how many other people are doing just that? Closhave book coming out one of these days. In the meantime, visit tomokastwists.blogspot.com for tips.

Finish the sentence: This career is for you if…you dare to give your natural talent 100% and prayer because then you will become Super~Natural.

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

21 01 2009
cervical-cancer1Though cervical cancer tends to occur in midlife, young women should still take precautions to prevent it. You can also get information from The Center for Disease Control’s website.

Cervical cancer occurs when the cells of the cervix become abnormal and start to develop uncontrollably, creating tumors. Once the cancer appears, it can progress through four stages, which are identified by the amount the cancer has spread.

While the cause of cervical cancer is unknown, certain factors are believed to increase one’s risk of developing cervical cancer. These include engaging in sexual activity at a young age, multiple sex partners and smoking.

More than 90 percent of women with cervical cancers are infected with human papillomavirus or HPV. It is the most significant factor for cervical cancer and is passed from one person to another during unprotected sex.

Symptoms
Early cervical cancer has no symptoms, but bleeding or spotting between periods or after intercourse can be one. The cancer is usually identified during a woman’s annual Pap smear and pelvic exam. That’s why you should start having these exams as soon as you become sexually active. Healthy young women who’ve never been sexually active should have their first annual pelvic exam by 21.

Ultimately, a woman with cervical cancer will notice abnormal vaginal bleeding or bloodstained discharge at unexpected times, like between menstrual periods, after intercourse or menopause. In advanced stages, there may be pain.

How to prevent it

  • Get a regular Pap smear.
  • Limit your number of sexual partners.
  • Stop smoking and stay away from second hand smoke.
  • Use a condom if you’re sexually active.
  • If you have an abnormal Pap smear, follow up.
  • Get the HPV vaccine.

Civil rights fight not over yet

Civil rights vets: Fight not over because Obama reaches top

By Eliott C. McLaughlin
CNN

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) — Barack Obama’s inauguration marks a profound manifestation of the Rev. Martin Luther King’s dream, civil rights leaders say, but the movement would be foolish to drop its guard now.

King did not fight tirelessly and ultimately give his life so African-Americans could take office; he fought for the disenfranchised and downtrodden, no matter their color, said Charles Steele, president and CEO of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which King and Steele’s father helped found.

“President-elect Barack Obama is just a piece of the puzzle,” he said. “This tells us that we are at a station, but it’s not our destination. We’ve got to get back on the train.”

Steele said he worries that those who espouse King’s dream may grow lackadaisical because an African-American has taken the reins of the free world. But it is imperative, he said, that they “march now more than ever before.”

Steele points to 1963, when tens of thousands of protesters converged on Washington to demand equal rights. It was there King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech from the Lincoln Memorial steps.

President Kennedy’s administration was considered the most receptive ever to the concerns of the civil rights movement, Steele said. But rather than sit back and hope Kennedy did the right thing, King and thousands stormed Washington to lay out demands that later would yield the Civil Rights Act and National Voting Rights Act.

Those down for the cause today must do the same with Obama, Steele said.

“Back in the ’60s we were fighting for President-elect Barack Obama; we just didn’t know it was him,” Steele said. “It was civil rights, not politics, that got us to this position, and we can’t forget that.”

Andrew Young remembers pickets outside City Hall the day he took office as Atlanta’s second black mayor in 1982. Young, a former King lieutenant, said he was initially confused when he noticed some of the protesters were his supporters.

“I said, ‘I haven’t changed.’ They said, ‘Yes, you have. You’re in charge,’ ” recalled Young, who also has been a U.S. congressman and U.N. ambassador. “They were there reminding me I was the man.”

Obama, too, needs to be reminded of the concerns of the African-American community, Young said, warning civil rights supporters not to assume Obama owes them something.

“He is one of the fruits of our labors,” Young said, “and all he has to do is plant more seeds and grow more trees that bear more fruit.”

It’s MLK Day!

19 01 2009

Instead of giving a historical overview about MLK (which I’m sure you got every year in grade school), I decided to share some quotes from him.

A man who won’t die for something is not fit to live.

A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.

A riot is the language of the unheard.

Almost always, the creative dedicated minority has made the world better.

Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

Whatever your life’s work is, do it well. A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better.

*And my personal favorite* Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.

What are your life’s rules?

16 01 2009

Jenyne M. Raines talks about creating your own philosophy or rules for life in her book, Beautylicious: The Black Girl’s Guide to the Fabulous Life. Well, me being the person I am, I decided to create my own. Basically all you have to do is figure out what you want in your life and what’s important to you, then voila! You have your own philosophy of life (or rules for living)…here, of course, are mine:

Stop procrastinating and BS’ing. Just go after what I want in my life!

Do things everyday to get closer to my goals.

Be physically active in some way everyday.

Be a fabulous and beautylicious diva everyday.

Continuously learn how I can improve. Strive to become the best version of me.
Cherish and spend time with my family and friends. Do new things and meet new people.
Stay fly by following my own style.
Treat everyone with respect and get along with everyone I encounter.
Take care of my mind, body and spirit.
Do me and my business. Don’t worry about what anyone else is doing.
Let go of things that create negativity for me.

What’s yours?
